Viola rode beside Simon as they entered the town of Angel Creek. It was small and quaint like she had pictured in her mind and from the letters she had read from the other belles. They passed the church sitting on the right, it’s wooden cross standing out like a beacon to guide all strangers to its front door. It drew her in, as if it were telling her she had secrets to confess and be forgiven for.

Viola avoided looking that way again. When the townsfolk find out what she’d been doing for the last few days, her reputation was sure to be ruined. Then, she felt the hard leather sheath in her pocket and she didn’t care. Not one bit. If she had to be ashamed of going after her property, then she’d suffer the consequences. She had her beloved telescope in her possession and couldn’t wait to watch the stars with it.

They passed the Stagecoach office where a boarded walk began, with hitching posts to separate the residents from the traffic on the street. “I should see if my belongings are at the boarding house. I instructed the men who took the Stagecoach back that day to please drop them off there. There it is.” The boarding house set alongside a small eatery. She didn’t have far to go which meant Simon and her would be parting ways very shortly. It made her sad to think about not seeing him again.

“What about your friends?”

“According to Sarah’s husband, Sheriff Quinn, the ladies left for an overnight trip to visit with Julia. By going after the outlaws, I missed them by a day.”

Simon frowned. “You are here alone?”

“Yes. For now I am. He said they would only be gone overnight.” She turned to him. “I’m glad the sheriff and the other men came upon us as we were leaving the line shack. Although, I didn’t feel one bit guilty we were going to leave them there all tied up to suffer the elements.”

Simon grinned. “I believe there is a bit of recklessness behind those beautiful eyes.”

“Maybe a little pirate is in my blood.”

He stopped when they got to the boarding house and slid from his saddle. “Here we are, Miss Destine. I don’t think it is proper to call you Viola now.”

She gave him a startled glance. “What will you do about your money?”

He shrugged. “I’ll make the best of things. Like I always do.” She felt a wave of sympathy for him. They were almost in Angel Creek when he checked the money box. It was almost empty except for a small stack of bills. Between that and the amount he had taken from Hicks was all that was left of his money.

“Maybe you can ride back to the line shack and look for your money.”

“Maybe. I have a feeling one of the outlaws buried it along the way. The loudest accuser is usually the guilty one. Zeke.”

Viola took his arm as he walked her to the front of the boarding house.
